exhaustion and smoke
inhalation after rescue.

Firefighters pulled two semiconscious teens to safety
on Tuesday after an intense kitchen fire filled a
Brooklyn home with choking smoke, officials said.
Dark plumes of smoke poured from the second floor of the
tidy Bensonhurst home, but firefighters were able to
crawl through pitch-black conditions to find the boys in
a rear bedroom, officials said.
The firefighters then carried the teenagers out a window
to the sidewalk below, where one of their mothers was
waiting with tears in her eyes.
"My son was brought
out [and] I was relieved," said a shaken Carolyn
Maldonado, 39. "He came out all right.">>>

New York's
Newest Fire Boat,"343", Sets
Sail Out Of Panama City
On the 8th anniversary
of the 9-11 attacks,
hundreds celebrated
the lives of those who were lost.
On the 8th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks, hundreds
celebrated the lives of those who were lost.
Joe Stark, Ret. FDNY & Engineer said, “343 fire
fighters made the ultimate sacrifice that day. We are
here to celebrate their lives."
New York’s newest fire boat was named in the honor of
the 343 firefighters and paramedics that died saving
others. The letters on the boat were forged from pieces
of steel from the World Trade Center.
"The fire boat will keep their memory and always be a
reminder of that day when those brave souls participated
in what was the greatest rescue in history,” said
Retired FDNY Chief, Bill Siegel>>>

LOTS MORE TO
DO: Joseph Graffagnino Sr., whose
Firefighter son was killed at the
Deutsche Bank building fire, said that
despite the City Council and Mayor's
Office's efforts to improve Fire and
Building Codes to prevent any
recurrences of the tragedy, too many
high-ranking city officials and
contractors got off the hook.

There is still anger under the mourning.
Firefighters, elected officials and family members sat
solemnly Aug. 18 in St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church
in Soho to commemorate the two-year anniversary of the
Deutsche Bank building fire that killed two Firefighters
based at nearby Ladder Company 5. Fire union officials
present elected not to talk about the controversial fire
out of respect for the families, but they have spent the
last two years pressing for investigations into the
city's handling of the incident.
Ill Will Towards Mayor
-
During the mass, the priest urged those on hand to
put anger aside as they remembered Firefighters
Robert Beddia and Joseph Graffagnino. But discontent
quietly surfaced after he recalled that last year he
was bumped from speaking during the plaque unveiling
at the firehouse by Mayor Bloomberg, and he looked
around the church to see if the Mayor was in
attendance. After he joked that his sermon was safe
because Mr. Bloomberg wasn't there, a Firefighter in
one of the back pews muttered sarcastically,
"Shock.">>>

NY's 10th
Mountain Division Leads Deadly
Eight-Year
Hunt For Osama bin
Laden In Eastern Afghanistan
On
the eve of the eighth 9/11 anniversary, nearly 3,000
soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division's 3rd Brigade
Combat team continue fighting around the clock.
Lee Ielpi, a retired New York City firefighter who lost
his son Jonathan in the attack, wants them to succeed.
"I wanted justice on the 12th of September and I want
justice eight years later," Ielpi said. "We have made
progress in capturing a number of the top officials. But
my concern is where is Osama bin Laden?
"Why is it so difficult to find him?"
In March, Obama reiterated his commitment to hunting
down bin Laden - and vowed to take the fight to the
terrorist hideouts in neighboring Pakistan>>> |

“Examining the process
of firefighting to see
if
there is a better and
safer way to operate”
By: Ray McCormack
Anytime
you have to go down a
stairway to get to a
fire your ability to
safely arrive at the
lower level will be
complicated by smoke,
heat, fire and the
actual stairway itself.
Cellar stairs, more
often than not, seem to
be the forgotten
stairway; not by the
fire service, at least
not yet, but by the
property owner. They ‘get
no respect’ in
many cases and usually
offer limited fire
protection.Where is the
cellar stairway located?
The quicker we know the
upper termination point
the sooner we can work
on figuring out where
the stairs lead. Many
older homes have all
their stairways in one
section of the house,
usually mid way back on
the side exposure wall.
All the different levels
of staircases are above
one another. Stairs that
are located adjacent to
a side exposure wall are
a benefit to us in that
our fire problem is
located to one side of
the home. You could have
fire behind your arrival
location (front of
cellar) however your
fire problem is
theoretically cut in
half when compared to a
centrally located
stairway that comes down
into the center of the
cellar. With no cellar
partitions however, your
fire problem could
literally be all around
you>>> |
