Eastport resident Paul Warhola, a Fire Department of New York firefighter and a first responder to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, died of an apparent stroke on Friday, August 14.

“This is a terrible tragedy for the FDNY and the entire City of New York,” Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, who was expected to attend Mr. Warhola’s funeral in Center Moriches on Wednesday alongside thousands of New York firefighters, said in a prepared statement. “He will be sorely missed. Our hearts go out to his family.”>>>

Fireman John McNamara, who toiled in the toxic rubble of Ground Zero and the flooded streets of hurricane ravaged New Orleans before cancer took his life, got a hero's funeral Friday.
Friends, family and fellow firefighters packed St. Patrick's Cathedral to say goodbye to the man they knew as a devoted husband and father, jokester, role model and tireless fighter for health benefits for 9/11 first responders.
About 200 firefighters and cops in full dress stood solemnly at attention on Fifth Ave. as McNamara's coffin arrived on a police-escorted fire engine - a procession usually reserved for the Bravest who fall in the line of duty>>>

As much as we value equality,  not all fire companies or shifts within a company are equal in performance. We can bring up those that lag behind through training. Working with firefighters that “get it” and are “into it” not only gives you an edge,  it is that edge that makes that group of firefighters superior to others.  The pneumonic device ‘ATTACK’ provides the outline to gaining a performance edge:

A – Attention to Detail

T – Tools

T – Technique

A – Attitude

C – Coordination

K – Knowledge
