A fast-moving fire trapped a disabled man in his Bronx home yesterday, giving him just minutes to live before two hero firefighters pulled him to safety.
Lt. Joseph Ginley of Ladder 59 bashed in the front door of the University Heights home about 3 a.m., then worked his way through smoke-filled corridors searching for victims.
Finally, in a third-floor living room, Ginley found a semi-conscious man in his 50s sitting on an electric scooter.
"You couldn't see anything," said Ginley. "He was moaning a little, which told me he was alive."
At the same time, Firefighter David Daly - who was outside on a tower ladder - crawled into the room through a window.
Together, the firefighters carried the stricken man down the stairs and outside to safety.
"Once I found him, he was limp," said Ginley. "We just tried to
get him out as fast as we could. It was like carrying a sack of potatoes. You're thinking which way you came in so you can retrace your steps. The adrenaline was definitely flowing."
The fire victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital. He was in serious condition from smoke inhalation but expected to survive.
Fire officials said the blaze, believed to have been started by a burning candle, began on the second floor and quickly spread to the third floor of 33 Buchanan Place.
"I just feel like it makes the job worthwhile," said Ginley. "You come to work trying to make a difference and everything worked out today."
