Pearl River St. Pat's Rugby Event Raising Funds to Fight Disease LoHud.com 3/15/10
The day and the site were chosen to coincide with the annual Pearl River St. Patrick's Day parade, the second-largest in the state only to the New York City parade. Pearl River's parade begins at 1:30 p.m. The Rugby Feis will be held in the heart of Pearl River on the parade route beginning at 9 a.m. and concluding before the start of the parade. All proceeds from the Rugby Feis will be used to fight Huntington's disease. Keith Kennedy's father-in-law, Capt. Denis P. Fleming of the FDNY, passed away from this neurological muscular disease in 2006. Kennedy's sister-in-law, Kara Fleming, a 1990 graduate of Pearl River High School, is now battling this illness. Mickey Sullivan, another Pearl River resident, is also afflicted with the disease. Both will be the guests of honor at the Rugby Feis. The schedule for the Feis is as follows: Rockland Boys Rugby Club vs. Allendale (N.J.) Old Boys Rugby Club, 9 a.m. Rockland Rugby Club vs. North Jersey Rugby Club ("A" game), 10 a.m. Rockland Rugby Club vs. North Jersey Rugby Club ("B" game), 11 a.m. There is no admission, but donations would be greatly appreciated. In addition, commemorative T-shirts and refreshments will be sold. "We encourage everyone to come early to the parade and support this new Pearl River St. Patrick's Day tradition," Tom Doherty, Rugby Feis volunteer and retired Pearl River High athletic director, said in an e-mail. "We know that Pearl River and Rockland County people always take care of their own. We anticipate a wonderful day of family fun to help support two great Pearl River families — the Flemings and the Sullivans, who have given so much to our community throughout the years. It is now our turn to give back." |
