Cops
in Brooklyn have busted
a tenant in connection
with an apartment fire
that killed five people.
A police source told the
Daily News the suspect
is a resident on the
second floor of the
Bensonhurst building who
got drunk, set fire to a
baby carriage and then
had a sudden attack of
remorse. He helped carry
at least one baby out of
the burning building.
"He's been down on
himself," the source
said. "He was drinking
all day, Friday into
Saturday, went into the
hallway and set a baby
carriage on fire. He
confessed, but he said
he didn't think (the
building) would go up
like that."
A law enforcement source
identified the suspect
as Daniel Ignacio, who
lived on the second
floor of the building.
He's being questioned at
the 62nd Precinct
stationhouse. Police
said charges are pending
against Ignacio.
The suspect is not the
man seen leaving the
building shortly before
the fire erupted early
Saturday.
Ignacio stood out to
detectives. He was
constantly outside the
Brooklyn building.
"He's been everywhere,"
the source said. "The
scene, the church. He's
been very accessible to
us."
Ignacio, who has at
least one previous
arrest for burglary, is
not the man seen leaving
the building shortly
before the Saturday
morning fire erupted.
The five people who died
in the fire include a
hero mom whose last act
was to save her kids.
