Farmingdale, L.I.: After watching the State of the Union address, I told my wife there would not be enough money for funding 9/11 rescuer illnesses after 2011, when the proposed spending cuts take effect. I had many gratifying experiences that made me proud to be a New York City firefighter before Sept. 11, 2001. However, nothing compared to the support and compassion the public had for us after that day. Not only for firefighters, but for police officers, and EMS workers. Now, after eight-plus years, most of the public support is gone, and the politicians tell the ones who became ill from that catastrophic day that it is a coincidence that we became sick. We are treated like the bastard children of local and federal government. They keep bickering over who is to be responsible and who is to pay for us. And in the interim, we are sick and dying. Some have died already. When will enough become sick or die to prove to those who make decisions that matter that we became sick from the toxins while working at Ground Zero? We want permanent funding, that is all. Is that too much to ask for, after what we encountered and are now going through?
