In an ongoing search
for remains of 9/11
victims, more
material gathered
from excavations
near the World Trade
Center site will be
sifted in a $1.4
million operation
starting in April.
City officials said
yesterday the
three-month sifting
operation will be
conducted at the
Fresh Kills former
landfill on Staten
Island.
Anthropologists and
other forensic
experts will
hand-sift 844 cubic
yards of soil and
other material -
about the amount
that fits in a dump
truck - that was
gathered since
December 2007 from
various sites around
Ground Zero. A prior
sifting operation
resulted in
identifying 27
additional victims.
To date, 1,629
victims of the World
Trade Center attacks
have been
identified, out of
2,752 killed.
