Queens Man Blows Self Up In House
NY Daily News 9/8/09
A Queens man committed suicide by
explosion on Monday - likely setting off a blast in his home to
kill himself, law enforcement sources said.
Gyung Lee, 54, died instantly when the blast shattered the rear
bedroom of his family's Fresh Meadows home, sending plumes of
yellow smoke dozens of feet in the air, shaken witnesses said.
"It sounded like three cannons going off at once," said neighbor
John Fraccalvieri. "[The smoke] was at least 40 feet high, very
thick, billowing yellow at the rear end of the house."
A propane tank was discovered near the corpse, and investigators
believe Lee filled the room with gas and then lit a match, the
sources said.
Lee lived in the 188th St. home with his girlfriend and her
adult daughter, but no one else was around at the time of the
blast.
Firefighters had the blaze under control about 30 minutes after
the 11 a.m. explosion, officials said.
The victim's girlfriend collapsed in tears as detectives
explained to her that they believed Lee had taken his own life.
"He lived with us for a few years," said her daughter Jim Lim.
"He was usually a happy guy, so I don't understand."
