The
684-foot New York has already passed sea trials, and the
next step for the in joining the fleet will be the
commissioning ceremony in New York City on Nov. 7.
Until then, the ship will still be known as PCU
(Pre-Commissioned Unit) New York, but after
commissioning it will be the USS New York. Then the New
York will be ready to put to sea as an amphibious
assault ship of the line with the mission of getting in
close to put up to 800 Marines ashore, wherever they’re
needed.
“This ship will be a symbol,” said Capt. Bill Galinis,
the program manager for the Navy’s Program Executive
Office for Ships.
“The Navy and the shipbuilder have worked hand-in-hand
to deliver this highly capable warship to the Navy and
our nation,” Galinis said. “It has been a tremendous
privilege for all of us who have had an opportunity to
participate in the construction of this ship.”
