Congratulatory banners lined the walls and hung from the balcony of the FDNY Academy’s auditorium on Aug. 13, as friends and family gathered to watch 44 members receive their promotions.

“With each promotion this Department has grown in strength,” said Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta. “Every one of you worked hard to get here and learned from the best teacher of all – experience.”

During the ceremony, three members were promoted to the rank of supervising fire marshal, 24 were promoted to lieutenant and 17 were promoted to fire marshal.

“You studied hard and dedicated many hours to get to this day,” said Chief of Department Salvatore Cassano. “Now you will help the Department move forward.”

Among the promoted members was Supervising Fire Marshal Thomas Kane of Ladder 101, who served as a member of the FDNY’s Family Assistance Unit for the last two years.

Firefighters from throughout the five boroughs came to the ceremony to cheer for their colleagues.

Also promoted was Lt. Patrick Connolly of Ladder 16, whose first day on the job was Sept. 11, 2001. Although he was at the site when the second plane hit and was buried under the debris, he said he never lost his love of the job.

“I left the corporate world for a sense of fulfillment in my life,” he said. “The first 10 minutes of being a firefighter gave me more fulfillment than 11 years in the corporate field.”

Lt. Frederick Ill, III, from Rescue 1, lost his father, Capt. Frederick Ill, Jr., from Ladder 2, on Sept. 11, 2001. He said he now is trying to “follow in his footsteps.”

He added that he feels prepared for his new leadership position because, “I’ve worked with the best officers in the field.”

Lt. Anthony Sodano of Ladder 126, also promoted during the ceremony, was applauded for rescuing three people from the attic of a burning Queens home in April.

“Anyone in the field would have done the same thing,” he said. “It felt good.”
