Town Honors Hero Fireman From Northport
Newsday 8/12/09
Councilman Stuart Besen on Tuesday night honored Brian Moritz, a 12-year veteran of the Northport Fire Department and six-year veteran of the New York Fire Department for heroic actions that ultimately saved a life.
On June 27, Brian Moritz, along
with other members of his firehouse, responded to a three-story
house fire in Elmhurst, Queens. The flames were approaching the
second floor when help arrived and heavy smoke was billowing
from a third story window.
While attending to a female who had escaped, Moritz discovered
her husband was still inside the burning house on the third
floor. Determined to save the woman’s husband, Moritz bravely
used the homeowner’s ladder to enter into the building. After
clearing the remaining glass from a broken window, he moved the
victim partially out of the window for fresh air, while Ladder
154 firefighters found a secure way to rescue the trapped man.
“Volunteer firefighters provide an invaluable service day in and
day out and the Town of Huntington is extremely fortunate to
have Brian Moritz among our dedicated first responders,” Besen
said. “Mr. Moritz’s resourceful, quick thinking efforts were
instrumental in saving a life, averting what could have been a
tragic loss to family, friends and community.”
Moritz appears above, holding the proclamation, flanked by
former Northport Chief John Ferro and Capt. Joe Pansini, then
Northport Village Trustee Henry Tobin and Northport Fire Chief
Robert “Beefy” Varese. In the back row, the members of the town
board.
