A Brooklyn street is now known as Lieutenant Dennis Mojica Way, in honor of a firefighter killed on September 11th during a rescue mission.
Family and friends gathered Monday at the corner of Nostrand Avenue and Avenue Z in Sheepshead Bay for the renaming ceremony.
Colleagues say they will remember him as a role model to many in the community.
"We didn't have that many latinos that the younger latin firefighters could look up to. And he set the pace, he set the tone. He set the mode for us to follow. He set a great mode," said Jorge Rico Diaz of the FDNY Hispanic Society. "Not only was he respected by his comrades he was respected by the community and by his superiors."
"He was my buddy, my pal, my soulmate, my best friend. But I knew that his first love was what he did for a living, which was saving lives. And he did that every day. And I don't mind being second best
Mojica served as a firefighter for 28 years. His achievements included helping out after the Oklahoma City bombings and the 1996 Olympic bombing in Atlanta," said Mojica's fiancee, Maria Barreto Mojica.
Mojica died two months before his wedding.
