Staten Island Advance 7/7/09

A large emergency response was prompted by an erroneous report of a woman overboard the Staten Island Ferry.

Radio calls for a woman who reportedly fell off the Staten Island Ferry near the St. George Ferry Terminal led to a large response by the Fire Department, the Coast Guard and Department of Transportation crews.

The incident, however, turned out to be unfounded and the Fire Department chalked it up to "an error by PD [Police Department]."

Simultaneously, a woman was feeling ill on a ferry docking in Manhattan and police officers were going to escort her back to Staten Island where they requested an ambulance be waiting.

Somehow, according to the FDNY, the message was misconstrued, prompting the emergency response.

Ferry service was not disrupted and is running according to schedule, according to the St. George dock office.
