FDNY Rescue Team Saves Seven From
Rough Waters After Jetboat Trouble
"When I saw the [rescue] boat they looked like angels,"
An FDNY rescue
team plucked a family of seven out of a
high-performance boat on the verge of
capsizing in the East River on Saturday
night.
A 15-foot Yamaha jetboat with a Bronx
family on board was returning home to
City Island after cruising past the
Statue of Liberty and eating at a New
Jersey restaurant when 3- to 4-foot
waves pounded the boat, flooding it with
water near E. 34th St.
A passing New York Waterway boat, the
Frank Sinatra, put out a mayday call at
7:02 p.m., the FDNY said.
The team from Marina 6 arrived at the
scene minutes later and pulled the three
children and four adults out of the
boat.
"When I saw the [rescue] boat they
looked like angels," said Ata Delorbe,
36, the father of two of the children -
Jazmin, 4, and David, 10.
The firefighters and their captain took
the Delorbes to safety at the E. 23rd
St. pier.
Capt. Lou Guzzo, 48, said the situation
could have been dire had they not showed
up when they did.
"It was the right place at the right
time," he said. "If we didn't get to
them, they would have gone under."
Yvette Delorbe, 35, who was on the boat
with her husband, David, 33, and son,
Nelson, 11, was relieved.
"Thank you, God," she said. "Thank you,
to the fire department."
Nelson was still reeling from the
experience a couple of hours later.
"I was shocked," he said.
