A raging four-alarm fire burned
through an apartment building in Bay Ridge, leaving dozens of
residents homeless and firefighters injured.
The blaze started just before midnight at the Third Avenue,
four-story building. Fire officials say the fire ripped through
all 15 apartment, causing significant damage.
Officials say dozens of residents were forced to flee, many with
young children in tow.
"We were all sleeping, when all of a sudden I heard an alarm,"
an unidentified resident told CBS 2 HD. "I heard my wife and ran
out into the hallway. Smoke was just blinding everywhere. I
grabbed my wife and kids and we started running down the stairs.
It's scary, very scary."
The flames spread through all four floors, shooting through the
roof, lighting up the Brooklyn night sky.
Deputy Fire Chief James Leonard says the heat and humidy, and a
costly delayed call to 911, made for a difficult night fighting
the flames.
Firefighters believe the flames started on one of the
groundfloor stores.
CBS 2 HD is told there were 13 injuries, including 12
firefighters. All injuries were considered minor and non-life
threatening.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire.
