(Saturday and Sunday) NY Times 7/16/09 A number of victims will soon have to be rescued from the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, but fortunately the accidents they’re involved in won’t be real. As part of Firefighter and Paramedic Appreciation Weekend members of these important professions will demonstrate how they save lives by extricating people from wrecked cars and burning buildings. The activities, which begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday with a ceremony honoring the centennial of the New York Fire Department’s Marine Unit, will also include rope-slide demonstrations, emergency-vehicle displays, fire-safety workshops, band concerts and, on Sunday, a cook-off among firehouse chefs. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, Pier 86, 46th Street and 12th Avenue, Clinton , (212) 245-0072, intrepidmuseum.org; free with museum admission: $19.50; $15.50 for 62+, veterans and college students; $14.50 for ages 6 through 17; $7.50 for 2 through 5; free for under 2, retired and active-duty military personnel and museum members; free this weekend for firefighters and paramedics, with a 20 percent discount for up to four of their guests. |
