Volunteerism To Be NYC's 9/11 Theme
AP 7/14/09
Public service is the theme of this year's New York City ceremony marking the anniversary of the 2001 World Trade Center attack.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. David Paterson told victims' families in a letter that volunteers will be paired with relatives of the lost to read the names of those who were killed.
The Sept. 11 ceremony will again be held in a public plaza adjacent to the 16-acre site, which is now taken over with construction.
In other years, the names have been read by victims' children, parents and siblings. Public officials and emergency service workers have also had the honor.
