Swimmer Critical After Rescue Off Coney Island
NY Daily News 6/25/09
A 20-year-old Brooklyn swimmer
was in critical condition on Sunday after being rescued off
Coney Island, officials said.
The man jumped into the ocean at 6:30 a.m. from the beach near
W. 17th St., witnesses told investigators.
Within minutes, he began to struggle in the chilly waters and
started screaming that he was drowning and needed help,
witnesses said.
A passerby flagged down an FDNY lieutenant, who dived into the
ocean and found the unconscious victim floating in about 15 feet
of water.
The swimmer was rushed to Coney Island Hospital but was still
unable to breathe on his own as of late Sunday, officials said.
