Hero Firefighters Armed Only With A Surfboard
and Rope Rescue 2 From Jamaica Bay
A group of hero firemen armed
with just a surfboard and a rope plucked a shivering couple from
the choppy waters off Jamaica Bay Monday, the FDNY said.
Firefighter Randy Eichin, of Ladder 134 in Far Rockaway, swam to
the frightened duo while clutching a surfboard - with a rope
attached to it - after the pair's red sailboat overturned off
Queens.
The couple and Eichin held onto the board as a group of firemen,
standing on the shore line, reeled them toward safety.
"I told them, just hang on. We will get you in. We will get you
to the hospital," said Eichin after the 2:45 p.m. rescue.
The woman was later treated at St. John's Queens Hospital for
hypothermia.
FDNY Lt. Walter Rogers said he first spotted the pair while
driving down Bay 32 Place with his crew.
Him and his men then stripped down to their shorts and raced to
save the couple.
