Crews Work On Bronx Water Main Break
NY1 News 6/14/09
Fire and environmental protection crews are repairing a water main break in Kingsbridge, Bronx that has left hundreds of customers without water and affected area subway and bus lines.
The break occurred at 231st Street and Broadway around 6 a.m. today and left 700 customers in the surrounding area with little or no water pressure, according to the Department of Environmental Protection.
DEP officials say that water pressure should be restored within the next few hours. They do not know yet when the cleanup effort will be complete.
The water flooded nearby businesses and one owner said he did not have any flood insurance.
"There's a lot water coming [down] Broadway, every basement is going to water. Our garage especially, the ground floor is under the water," said Jamil Misch of Riverdale Parking.
"It looks almost like a bomb hit it, although that's not the case. The sidewalk is undermined completely, there's a hole in the street," said Bronx Councilman Oliver Koppell. "And this is just about the worst place in the community where this could happen because all the buses converge on this corner, as well as a lot of traffic going from Kingsbridge to Riverdale."
Police advised the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to close the 231st Street station for the Number 1 subway line, and several bus lines are also experiencing detours and delays.
