Mighty Quinn: FDNY's Capt. Vincent G. Fowler
FDNY's Jerry Roach called to
remind Mighty of the 10th anniversary of the passing of Capt.
Vincent G. Fowler, who died on June 4, 1999, one day after
battling a house fire in Ozone Park. Vinny, as he was known
growing up in Rosedale, joined the FDNY on Oct. 14, 1978, and
during his career was assigned to numerous firehouses throughout
the city, including Engine 234, Ladder Companies 123, 120 and 7,
as well as Battalion 9, and received three commendations for
meritorious acts.
At the time, Commissioner Von Essen said, "Vincent Fowler was a
decorated officer who served the people of the City of New York
with great distinction for 21 years. A man of distinguished
courage and valor, he gave his life in the performance of his
duties, protecting the lives and property of all New Yorkers.
Even after he became trapped in a smoke-filled basement, his
concerns where not for his own safety but for the safety of his
men."
At his funeral, Vinny's daughter, Dina Fowler, her voice
trembling with pride and pain, told the mourners, "Not only was
he my father, he was my teacher, my coach, my protector, and
most of all, he was my best friend. My father and I had a very,
very tight bond and I kept no secrets from him," she said,
adding, "I hope to grow up to be like you."
