A stubborn blaze tore through a building in lower Manhattan early Friday, injuring eight firefighters and a resident, fire officials said. No one was seriously hurt. The fire erupted at 202 Thompson St. in the West Village just after 6 a.m. The three-alarm fire forced several people to climb through their windows to safety, including a woman who rescuers escorted down a fire escape. About 140 firefighters battled the inferno for nearly three hours before finally bringing it under control, officials said. Investigators haven't determined what caused the fire, but there was no indication that it was suspicious. Four firefighters were taken to St. Vincent's Hospital; four were rushed to Beth Israel Medical Center. It was unclear if the resident who was hurt was treated at the scene or taken to a hospital. |
