Two firefighters were seriously injured when they fell as they battled a four-alarm blaze at a warehouse in Queens on Tuesday night, fire officials said.

Both men were listed in serious condition at Elmhurst Hospital Center with head injuries, and one of them also had a broken arm, said Frank Dwyer, a Fire Department spokesman.

Mr. Dwyer said the men fell as they fought the fire from inside the warehouse, at 56-96 49th Street in Maspeth. Eight other firefighters also suffered minor injuries.

About 100 firefighters responded to the fire, said Deputy Assistant Chief Joseph Pfeifer. He added that the fire posed a particular challenge, because of the conditions inside the building. He described the fire, which began at about 8 p.m., as “stubborn.”

“There are difficult conditions because it is very dark, there is a lot of stock, such as cardboard and other materials, that are packed inside the warehouse,” he said. The materials are used in nursing homes, and included gloves, bedding, linen and various boxes, Mr. Pfeifer said.
