2 Dogs Killed In House Fire In Staten Island

Staten Island Advance 2/19/09

A two-alarm fire that ripped through a home in Staten Island's Port Richmond community killed two dogs, but four people inside at the time managed to escape.

Two adults and two children -- believed to be a 14-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl -- were inside 41 Anderson Ave. when the fire broke out at approximately 10:15 this morning. It took firefighters over an hour to bring the flames under control.

The four occupants fled the home, but as the blaze spread quickly, two dogs on the first floor died. The canines were a 13-year-old Dalmatian and a 2-year-old beagle, said Edward Pickman, the owner of the home.

Pickman was not one of the people inside the two-story residence at the time of the fire.

Two firefighters were burned and one hurt his shoulder battling the blaze. All three injuries are non-life-threatening.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
