Plaque Dedicated for SFM Doug Mercereau

Meticulous, dedicated and professional were words used to describe Supervising Fire Marshal Douglas Mercereau during his plaque dedication on Dec. 29 at the quarters of Engine 243 and Ladder 168.

FDNY members stood shoulder to shoulder on the apparatus floor to remember the supervising fire marshal, who died on Dec. 2, 2007.

“Doug was destined to become a great leader in this Department,” said Capt. Michael Jezycki of Engine 243. “He leaves behind a legacy of hard work and dedication.”

The 12-year veteran of the FDNY was remembered for his attention to detail and extraordinary organization.

He also was described as a loving father to his two daughters, Renee, 7, and Melanie, 6.

“He was precise, professional, serious and smart - and I want to highlight professional,” said Deputy Chief Fire Marshal Randall Wilson, who met SFM Mercereau when he was training to be a fire marshal and later worked with him at the Citywide South Command. “I hope every time someone passes this plaque they will remember his dedication.”

SFM Mercereau was assigned to Engine 243 after graduating from the Academy, then served at Ladder 168, Engine 54 and Ladder 159 before being promoted to fire marshal in September 2004. He was promoted to supervising fire marshal in November 2007.

His plaque will hang at the quarters of Citywide South, where he was assigned when he died.

“He was honest, hard working and dedicated,” said Firefighter Kevin McCole of Engine 243, who graduated from the Fire Academy with SFM Mercereau and later worked alongside him at the firehouse. “His leaving Engine 243 was a tremendous blow to the firehouse, but his passing was a tremendous blow to us all.”

SFM Mercereau’s family, including his brothers, Tom, Brian and Jim, and sisters, Betsy and Cindy, attended the ceremony in his honor. His daughters were presented with his firefighter’s helmet by Chief Wilson.
