Wounded Bravest Will Go To Black Sunday

Anniversary Mass For Fallen Brothers

NY Daily News 1/22/09

Eugene Stolowski is still in agony from his near-fatal leap from a Bronx apartment window in the Black Sunday blaze, but the ex-firefighter will be at Friday's Mass for two fallen brothers.

"All the families, all the children, gather to keep their memories alive," Stolowski's wife, Brigid, said Thursday at the criminal trial of two tenants, a building manager and owner charged with manslaughter in the case.

Testimony resumes after lunch Friday, giving the families time to grieve at the four-year anniversary of the fire. The service at St. Joseph's Church in the Bronx begins at 11 a.m.

"They told us he was going to die," Brigid Stolowski said of her husband's spinal cord injuries. Because he may appear as a witness, Eugene Stolowski, 37, has not been to court.

Six firefighters leaped from a fourth-floor apartment on Jan. 23, 2005, after becoming trapped by a raging fire in the E. 178th St. tenement building. Firefighter John Bellew, 37, and Lt. Curtis Meyran, 46, died. The others survived.
