Top Floor Of 6-Story Building Burned; 250
Firefighters Called In To Battle The Flames
WCBSTV 8/1/2008
The
six-alarm fire that lit up Brooklyn on Friday night took hours to
put out. In the end it destroyed the top floor of the six-story
building and put several firefighters in the hospital.
In all, 23 firefighters were injured fighting the blaze, but all of
the injuries were considered minor.
Chopper 2 HD was over the scene just after 6 p.m. as smoke billowed
out the occupied residential structure in the Flatbush section of
the borough.
"I'm looking up like this. I'm shocked, I'm stunned," one resident
said.
The fire up above burned for some time before residents of the
residential building knew anything was wrong. It ripped through five
apartments on the top floor and threatened to take the entire roof
as firefighters got to work.
"In the early moments we were trying to contain the fire to one side
of the building and what they saw from the helicopters was
firefighters up on the roof cutting holes to relieve the
smoke," FDNY Assistant Chief James Pfeifer said...more>

Raging Bronx Fire Injures Three Kids
NY Daily News 7/18/2008

Towering flames exploded from
the roof of a Bronx apartment
building early Thursday in a
four-alarm blaze that injured
three children and left more
than 200 people homeless. The
raging fire engulfed the top
floor of 1998 Newbold Ave., and
smoke filled the six-story
structure, forcing tenants to
race outside just after 1 a.m.
"I saw a stampede coming down
the stairs and didn't know what
was going on," said Walter Calle,
who lives in the Parkchester
building. "Things were really
crazy, really dramatic."
Firefighters and a few
courageous residents ran through
the building to alert sleeping
neighbors and pull people away
from the flames and choking
smoke. "The flames were rolling
over our heads," said
Firefighter Bill Horel of Ladder
47. "I found three children
huddled under a window trying to
get air." Investigators believe
the fire, which was ruled
accidental, ignited in an
overloaded surge protector in
the hurt children's apartment,
an FDNY source said. The Red
Cross provided temporary shelter
for the building's residents.

Bronx
Fire Ravages Row of Buildings
A
row of houses in the Bronx were ravaged by fire on Friday, forcing
around 20 people from their homes. "I saw the fire it was scary
and I called the next door neighbor, who ran out in bare
feet, no shoes no nothing," Tremont resident Amy Williams said. Home
video taken by a neighbor shows how strong winds fanned the flames and
helped them spread to all five homes. When it started at about 5
p.m. Friday, Williams ran outside and was on the street yelling for
help. "I said come quickly come quickly it's blazing." Click
